The concert will feature songs with poems by Þórarinn Eldjárn. Performers at the show are Erla Dóra Vogler mezzo-soprano, Lilja Guðmundsdóttir soprano and Eva Þyri Hilmarsdóttir pianist, in addition to which poet Þórarinn Eldjárn takes part in the concert and tells about his poems.
Every Icelander knows Þórarin Eldjárn, but he recently celebrated his 70th birthday. In his fruitful working life, which is nowhere near over, he has given the nation a myriad of poems and collections of poetry for both children and adults.
The nation's composers have been diligent in evaluating Þórarinn's poems, and of the many composers who have composed songs for his poems, Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson, Hauk Tómasson, Egil Ólafsson, Jónas Tómasson, John Speight, Kjartan Ólafsson, Atli Heimir Sveinsson, Hildigunnur Rúnarsdóttir, Michael Jón Clarke, Jóhann G. Jóhannsson and Elín Gunnlaugsdóttir, who wrote the musical Björt í Sumarhúsum. Performers have put together a repertoire that includes some of the most well-known songs that have been composed with Þórarinn's poems, mixed with fun compositions that are rarely heard.
Þórarinn Eldjárn's poems are witty and reach all age groups, but Þórarinn uses the Icelandic language in an original and fun way. The composers have also been highly successful in composing songs in a light style, even in blues and jazz, which are suitable and reflect the playfulness of the poems particularly well. This will be a high-quality and very accessible concert where the repertoire is of a nature that all age groups can enjoy. We believe that we will reach a much wider group than traditional poetry concerts would do.
