Hotel Bláfell

Hotel Bláfell is a small romantic hotel in the village of Breiðdalsvík, located by road no. 1 between Skaftafell national park and Mývatn lake.
The hotel has 46 rooms including standard, family and deluxe rooms all of which have private bathroom, TV & phone. A welcoming restaurant takes pride in offering a local foods menu, served in traditional ways.

Afterward, the sauna presents the perfect relaxation - only to round off the evening by the fireplace in the hotel sitting room. A short walk to the nearby swimming pool - equipped with a tempting hot tub - is also an option.

Jórvíkurskógur

Jórvíkurskógur is an attractive Icelandic woodland with growing forest by Icelandic standards. It has all that the local people desire: Green growth and plants with berries and mushrooms. Tinna Millenium Forest

In the summer of 2000 a forest project was started in Eydalir by Landnyrðingsskólbakkar. It was a part of the National Millenium Forest Project. The area is ideal for walks and other outdoor activities. In the 1950s a considerable forestry took place on the banks of river Tinna in Valley Norðurdalur, approx. 1 km. off the national highway. At Staðarborg in Valley Breiðdalur a green region has also been established resulting in agreeable outdoor- and walking grounds.

Saxa

Just off the coast of farm Lönd in Stöðvarfjörður there´s a singular rock formation called Saxa ("The Grinder). This is an impressive perforated cliff, penetrated ceaselessly by the swelling waves of the Atlantic, resulting in spectacular eruptive splashes which fling seaweed and algae, minced by the force of the ocean, high into the air.

Höskuldsstaðir

Höskuldsstaðir is a farmstead of distinction, located in the south branch of valley Breiðdalur, close to highway no. one. A postoffice up to 1947 and a relay for the postmen on their way across Berufjörður pass. Höskuldsstaðir was the birthplace of the venerated scolar Dr. Stefán Einarsson former proffesor at John Hopkins University of Baltimore. Einarsson is remebered for his literary achievements as well as for his research in the sphere of the Icelandic language.

Heydalir - Eydalir

Eydalir in Breiðdalur valley has been a vicarage since early christanity in Iceland and a number of renowned vicars have served there through the ages. Among them was the hymnpoet Einar Sigurðsson (17th. century) whose poetry is still venerated among the nation. A pillarstone has been erected in his memory at Eydalir.

Towns & Villages

Each town in Austurland has its own characteristics. In some of the coastal villages t, the influence of North European neighbors obvious to everyone. 

The French made a strong impact in Fáskrúðsfjörður where the road signs are made out in French as well as in Icelandic. Norwegian influence is easily detected in the Eskifjörður and Seydisfjörður architecture. No such roots are to be seen in Egilsstadir which is the latest addition to East Iceland agglomeration, founded in the late forties of the 20th century.
