Now that you're finally here, how do you get around?
The most popular way to get around the region is by driving yourself. Whether it's on your own car or a rental, it is by far the best way to travel through Austurland. Do it at your own pace, stop where you want, and spend as much time in the region as you'd like! That being said, it isn't necessary to bring your own car or a rental in order to make your way from town to town. The local bus company operates throughout the year with daily trips between the towns of Austurland.
Austurland by bus
Strætó buses (public transportation in Iceland) drive around East Iceland all year. Stops at: Borgarfjörður, Seyðisfjörður, Egilsstaðir, Reyðarfjörður, Eskifjörður, Neskaupstaður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Stöðvarfjörður, Breiðdalsvík, Djúpivogur and Höfn.

Austurland by bike
Biking around Iceland is a pretty popular activity. Austurland is a beautiful destination for cycling enthusiasts with paved roads between all towns. You can also find unique and interesting bike trails through mountains and forests.
Austurland by hitch-hiking
Hitch-hiking is another common way of traveling around Iceland. Every summer you can see people standing on the side of the road, thumbs up, ready for the next part of their journey. One shouldn't find it too hard to catch rides between towns. A great way of hitching a ride is to head out to the nearest gas station and ask around. Be sure to stay safe - and enjoy the ride!
