VOR/ WIOSNA Festival

Now in its sixth edition, VOR / WIOSNA Festival brings together contemporary art and migration stories from and about the Polish diaspora in Iceland and beyond. Held in the remote town of Egilsstaðir, in the east of Iceland, the festival is both a celebration of cultural hybridity and a response to the needs of the local Polish community, which in some towns makes up nearly one quarter of the population.

Founded to provide a platform for Polish artists living in Iceland, as well as to introduce Polish culture to the broader population, the festival aims to give voice to those who often find themselves in the artistic "in-between"—between countries, languages, and cultural systems.

This year’s main exhibition, titled “Migration is life,” explores the multifaceted experience of displacement—economic, political, historical. Featured artists include internationally recognized names such as Rafał Milach / A.P.P ( Archive of Public Protest), who documents protests against Poland’s harsh immigration policy; Bart Urbański, whose work critically dissects media portrayals of Polish migrants in the UK; and Andrii and Lia Dostliev, Ukrainian artists who represented Ukraine at the Venice Biennale 2024. Their work, Comfort Work, questions sanitized, Western-friendly narratives about refugees.

The festival’s visual identity was designed by artist and graphic designer Kaja Kusztra, and Dr. Zofia Nierodzińska will conduct a month-long artistic research residency in Egilsstaðir focusing on the Polish community in the region.

Hosted by Sláturhúsið , the VOR Festival is one of the few recurring cultural events in Iceland dedicated to immigrant artistic expression. It builds bridges across languages, borders, and generations.

Już po raz szósty w Egilsstaðir we wschodniej Islandii odbędzie się Festiwal VOR / WIOSNA – wydarzenie dedykowane polskiej mniejszości narodowej oraz wszystkim zainteresowanym współczesną polską sztuką i problematyką migracji.

Festiwal powstał jako odpowiedź na realne potrzeby lokalnej społeczności w okręgu Múlaþing, gdzie osoby pochodzenia polskiego stanowią dziś nawet jedną czwartą populacji niektórych miejscowości. W regionie tak odległym geograficznie jak Fljótsdalshérað, dostęp do kultury w ojczystym języku i przestrzeni dla artystów-emigrantów staje się nie tylko kwestią estetyki, lecz także sprawą społeczną.

Tegoroczna edycja festiwalu skupia się na złożonych doświadczeniach migracyjnych Polek i Polaków w Europie oraz Ukraińskiej mniejszości w Polsce. Wystawa otwierająca festiwal, zatytułowana po prostu "Migration is life", stawia pytania o miejsce człowieka w świecie granic, przymusów ekonomicznych i nadziei na lepsze życie. Udział w niej biorą m.in. Rafał Milach / A.P.P – dokumentujący protesty przeciwko brutalnym politykom migracyjnym w Polsce,
