Hengifossárgil Gorge
Hengifossárgil is known for its striking rock layers and dramatic geological formations. A hiking trail through the gorge leads past two beautiful waterfalls.
Along the way you will first encounter Litlanesfoss (also known as Stuðlabergsfoss), framed by impressive basalt columns that create a unique and photogenic setting. Farther up the trail lies Hengifoss, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, with a drop of 128.5 metres. The waterfall is especially famous for the striking red clay layers visible in the surrounding cliffs.
The hike through the gorge is fairly steep, with an elevation gain of about 300 metres. Most visitors should allow around two hours for the round trip. It is also possible to hike up to Hengifoss and return on the opposite side of the gorge.
When crossing the river, take extra care, as water levels can sometimes rise and the current may be strong.
