The Highland Circle Itineraries

The Highland Circle is a journey through the wild and varied landscapes of Austurland (East Iceland), where forests and fertile valleys give way to waterfalls, deep canyons, remote mountains and the vast open spaces of the Icelandic highlands.

Following the Highland Circle takes you through some of Austurland’s most remarkable highland landscapes, from Egilsstaðir into the remote interior, with dramatic canyons, waterfalls, mountains and geothermal areas along the way.

We recommend allowing around five full days to experience the Highland Circle at a comfortable pace, with approximately one full day for each of the five itineraries along the route. This gives you time to hike, explore natural wonders, enjoy local experiences, stay overnight along the way and discover something different each day without rushing.

For those who want to spend more time on the trails, the Highland Circle Hiking Guide offers additional hiking routes through the wild landscapes of Austurland. Adding hikes to your journey may require extra days, depending on the trails and experiences you choose.

Want to truly experience the Highland Circle?

If you want to take the time to truly experience the region and immerse yourself in the local culture, try activities, discover local food, meet the people, and explore the landscapes beyond the main sights.

We recommend allowing around 5 days for the journey.
